Grace Potter – The Woman Behind The Rock & Roll

Grace Potter is a Vermont-based singer-songwriter, guitarist and keyboard player. Her latest release, which came out in June, is a self-titled album with her band the Nocturnals. They are constantly on the road, and put on one of the best live shows in music today.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are playing here in KC at the Kanrocksas Music Festival, Aug. 6 .

Self-described as “a modern-day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini-dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa Sticky Fingers,” the proof is in the pudding … uhem, on their new album released by Hollywood Records.

Little wonder that Grace and her cohorts have chosen to title it, directly and emphatically, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

“This record is the first time it’s really been us — the first time we’ve all found each other and ourselves,” said Potter with obvious excitement. “Everybody was totally comfortable, everything we had was sitting right in front of us, and it just poured out of us. The whole thing was fluid and effortless. In my mind, an album shouldn’t be self-titled unless it feels that way.”

McClain Johnson took a few moments of Grace Potter’s time before the band hits town next month. Take a listen to the conversation below and be sure to check them out at Kanrocksas.
