JEFF the Brotherhood is a Nashville-based rock band. JEFF the Brotherhood are opening up for The Kills Jan. 21 at the Midland. Jake Orrall recently wrote in to discuss created their riff-based rock and writing songs about applesauce.

How did JEFF the Brotherhood first get started?

We began by playing in our attic.

What do you enjoy most about the rock scene in Nashville?

Hanging out with friends.

What has been your strangest night out in Nashville?

Hmmm, dunno.

You guys have a really tight sound. How do you approach songwriting?

I write riffs, then structure the lyrics.

How old were you when you wrote your first song? What did you write it about?

5 years old.  It was about applesauce.

You formed JEFF the Brotherhood while still in high school. What do you remember most about your first show together?

I don’t really remember our first show.

Your songs have a very live feel. Do you try to record your tracks as live as possible?

No, we like to do overdubs and guitar solos.

You tour all the time. What have been some of your favorite memories from being on the road?

Hanging out with friends and visiting new places!

What do you enjoy most about touring?

Eating different foods.

How did your collaboration with Best Coast come together?

We did a split 7″ for Volcom Entertainment, who suggested it.

What are your hobbies outside of music?

Fishing and cooking on the grill.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I don’t think so.
